Rooted in dance, Ciotóg has no fixed borders in exploring the physical form and is dedicated to embracing the spectrum of the arts in the creation of performance in Irish and English. Extending the norm of artist and performance, and of the relationship between art and its community, Ciotóg creates alliances between dance and other art-forms, and between professional and non-vocational artists – reflecting and engaging with the multiplicity of human experience.

Ciotóg’s work is inspired by an engagement with human and social issues. We believe that dance can be a form of civic dialogue, creating spaces for us to engage with one another and our surroundings, provoke reflection and allowing us to imagine ourselves, and others differently. Dance, in its physicality, cuts across barriers to relate directly, providing a universal means of communication and articulation.

We are interested in dance that reflects human diversity and reveals the individual behind the movement. Ciotóg often chooses to collaborate with professional and lay artists, to situate professional dance practice within a social context and to exploit the innately collaborative nature of the art-form through engaging with a wide range of people. It is concerned with the questions, who can dance? about what? for whom? whose dance may be seen?

Ciotóg’s style often intertwines complex and technical virtuoso choreography with text, music and other media, and plays with performances in various contexts, from theatre-based, site-specific and virtual, continually seeking new platforms and means for engagement with audiences. Recent developments focus more on process-based works involving long-term engagement with specific populations.

Ciotóg’s work has involved collaborations with composers, cinematographers, architects, actors, writers, visual artists, professional and lay dancers, rural, suburban and urban dwellers, has been performed by six to 84 year olds, and has been invited to festivals and venues throughout Ireland, the US and Europe.

Tá Ciotóg tiomnaithe ar an rince, agus ar mhodhanna nua cumarsáide a chothú idir an phobal agus an rince. Tá spéis againn sa dhuine agus sa phearsantacht taobh thiar de na gluaiseachta. Bíonn taibheoirí éagsúla páirteach sna tógraí, idir óg agus aosta, gairmiúl agus tosaitheoir. Cruthaíonn muid i gcomhar le cumadóirí, aisteoirí, scríbhneoirí, ceoltóirí agus fís-ealaíontóirí, agus cuirtear tógraí i láthair i suíomhanna éagsúla, ón sráid go stáitse, in Éirinn agus thar lear. Tá Ciotóg lonnaithe sa Ghaeltacht i gConamara agus feidhmíonn muid trí Ghaeilge agus trí Bhéarla.
