Galway Dance Days 2014
Na Cótaí Dearga
'Na Cótai Dearga' will be first perfomed at NUI Galway's 'Arts in Action' programme, March 6 2014
A collaboration between choreographer/director Ríonach Ní Néill, film artist Joe Lee, professional dancers, and 60-80s year old members of The Macushla Dance Club
World premiere of 'The Area', a Dublin dance film at Dance on Camera Film Festival, Lincoln Center, New York, February 2 2014.
THE AREA has been selected from international competition for the 42nd Dance on Camera Film Festival at the Lincoln Center. 'The Area', directed by Ríonach Ní Néill & Joe Lee, was chosen with three other entries from Canada, France and the US to celebrate artists who find their artistic inspiration in their communities. It features members of the Macushla Dance Club for the +50s, from Dublin's inner city, and captures their intimate relationships with their ever-changing Dublin neighbourhood.
Funny and poignant - their loves, losses, struggles and celebrations are recounted through the prism of dance. Past and present merge, as a retail loading bay once again becomes a ballroom, a carpark hosts a kitchen poker game, and men serenade tailors dummies in an abandoned post-industrial dockland. Their dances are an ephemeral grafitti. 'We were here! This is ours!'
The Macushla Dance Club is a dance club for the +50s. It provides access to dance and performance for older people, nurtures creative exchanges between professional dance and older people, supporting older people’s contribution to Dublin’s vibrant and diverse dance scene through its three-strand dance programme.Read more...
